The CEO of Google, Sundar Pichai, celebrates his 45th birthday on the 12th of July. The man who earns an annual salary of almost $200 million, had the most humble beginning back home in Chennai. Son of an electrical engineer, Pichai went onto study engineering as well from IIT Kharagpur.

Having studied MS and MBA in the States, he joined Google in the year 2002 and eventually went onto become its CEO in 2015. In-spite earning millions of dollars, his parents continue to reside in Chennai in their modest 2bhk flat.

As a young boy, Pichai was often considered to be the shy one. “He’s an amazing person. He is very shy, but opinionated. He has an opinion on everything,” stated one of his neighbour who lived besides the Pichai family for over 40 years.
The Pichai’s were a modest middle-class Indian family who saved up money for as long as 3 years so they could afford a scooter.

“They’re a humble family, a typical middle class family. His father earned around Rs 3000 a month but that was sufficient in those days. His father was an engineer and his role model,” stated the neighbour.
Sundar’s initial attraction towards technology was because of his father. “Even at a young age, he was curious about my work. I think it really attracted to him to technology,” stated his proud father.
While Sundar Pichai’s intelligence has already been witnessed by the world, did you know the CEO also has a photographic memory? “During a conversation, a family friend gave me his phone number. I asked my wife to write it down but she forgot. After some months, I asked Sundar about the number, and he reeled it out instantly,” stated his father.
Sundar Pichai was also quite the bookworm during his school days. With Science being his favourite subject, he would often indulge in quizz competitions and puzzles and rarely played outdoors.
With subjects like geography and history, Pichai could hardly make it to the top ranks in school. But at the University level, he easily went onto win a scholarship at Stanford.
But the chase to be at the top never let Sundar forget the hardships his family went through to help him attain success.
“My dad and mom did what a lot of parents did at the time. They sacrificed a lot of their life and used a lot of their disposable income to make sure their children were educated,” stated Sundar with gratitude.
Pichai, at the moment, draws a salary of as much as $200 million a year, which makes it a whopping Rs 3.82 Crore in a single day. And while Sundar did pay back his parents by purchasing a plush flat back home in Chennai, his parents preferred to continue their stay in the modest 2bhk home where their son grew up.
